Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
