Minister Confirms Ministry of Defence Investigating Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Personnel Told to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defense official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the potential security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, and staff have been told to refrain from talking about secret information in any cars.

Safety Guidance for MoD Staff

During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about secret information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

He explained that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that safety is a concern in all contemporary cars.

Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any vehicle, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all vehicle, to only have those secret talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Defence Background

The announcement follows reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been directing laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.

This broader security environment highlights the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in every aspects of government activities, from vehicle usage to communication practices.
